“My First Tattoo: What to Expect and How to Prepare”

Hey there, ink newbie!
I’m Isaac Delestre, a tattoo artist in McKinney, TX, and I’m pumped to guide you through your very first tattoo. Whether you're excited, nervous, or both — trust me, I’ve got you. From the moment you walk into our studio to the moment you leave with your new ink, I’ll walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and how we’ll make your first tattoo an unforgettable experience.

The Consultation: Bringing Your Vision to Life

When you step into Saito Ink, my #1 goal is to make you feel comfortable and heard. Most first-timers come in with a meaningful idea — maybe a tribute, a symbol of growth, or just something that’s been calling to them for years. Whatever it is, I’m here to help bring it to life.

During our consultation:

  • I’ll listen to your story and help craft a custom design that fits your vision and vibe.

  • We’ll go over size, placement (like forearm, wrist, shoulder), and how it fits your lifestyle.

  • I’ll share my portfolio to spark ideas, especially if you’re drawn to styles like realism, Japanese, or fine line.

Pro Tip: Bring reference images or a sketch — even if it’s rough. And don’t worry if it’s not fully formed. That’s what I’m here for. You can book a consult directly on the Saito Ink website, and check our FAQs for deposit and prep info.

Prepping for Your Session: How to Show Up Ready

To make sure we create your best tattoo, your body needs to be ready. Here’s how I tell all my first-timers to prep:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water 48 hours before your appointment. Hydrated skin takes ink better.

  • Eat Before You Come: Never get tattooed on an empty stomach. Eat a full meal and pack a snack if it’s a longer session.

  • No Alcohol or Blood Thinners: Avoid alcohol, aspirin, or other blood thinners for at least 24 hours before.

  • Dress for the Area: Wear loose, comfy clothes that give access to where we’re tattooing. Bring a sweater in case the studio feels cool.

  • Bring the Essentials: Your ID, headphones, a water bottle, and maybe some chill vibes.

We maintain strict hygiene protocols at Saito Ink, and I’ll walk you through everything so you feel 100% safe and confident.

In the Chair: What to Expect During the Tattoo

Here’s how the tattoo session usually flows at Saito Ink:

  • Prep & Stencil: I’ll clean and shave the area gently, then apply your stencil. You’ll check the placement and give the green light.

  • The Tattoo Begins: The buzzing starts with the outline. Most clients describe it as a scratchy sting, manageable for most areas. Bonier spots like ribs may sting more, but I’ll guide you through it.

  • Shading & Color: This is where your piece comes to life. You’ll start seeing the final artwork take shape, and I promise — it’s worth it.

Want music? Silence? Chill convo? You set the vibe. If you need a break, just say the word. Your comfort is a priority.

Aftercare: Keeping That Ink Looking Fresh

Once your tattoo is complete, your job is to protect the art. I’ll wrap you up and send you home with detailed aftercare instructions:

  • Keep the wrap on for a few hours, then wash gently with unscented soap.

  • Apply a thin layer of lotion like Curel (lotion) 2–3 times a day.

  • Avoid pools, direct sun, sweating too much, or scratching.

  • Wear loose clothing over the area to let it breathe.

Healing typically takes 2–3 weeks. I’ll follow up within a week to check in — and of course, I’m always available for questions.

From My Chair to Your Skin

Watching someone walk out of Saito Ink with their first tattoo — smiling, confident, and proud — is why I do what I do. This isn’t just ink. It’s your story, now part of your skin forever.

So if you're ready to take that first step, I’m here to make sure your first tattoo is nothing short of epic.

Let’s create something unforgettable.
